Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a modern form of behavioral therapy that provides practical life-skills that can help us find our way through mental health challenges. It combines values clarification (identifying what kind of life you want to live), mindfulness (an ability to attend to the present moment), behavioral activation (doing the things that bring you joy), and experiential acceptance (making room for difficult thoughts and feelings). ACT is a powerful tool for healing because it honours the individual as the expert of their own journey. Rather than prescribing a “way out,” it offers a set of tools to experiment with to work toward increased psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility refers to our ability to be in contact with the present moment, and adapt or persevere with behaviors that comprise to a rich, meaningful, value-aligned life.
